Every day, we round up a few genuine, verified developments from India’s courts that could matter to ordinary people — not just lawyers. Whether you’re dealing with a family dispute, a pending criminal matter, or an insurance claim, here’s what happened in the Supreme Court and High Courts recently, explained in plain language.
Supreme Court Orders Faster Trials and Stronger Action on Dowry Harassment Cases
The Supreme Court has directed all states and High Courts to strengthen how dowry-related cases are handled. This includes making sure Dowry Prohibition Officers are actually functioning, setting up better support such as women’s helplines, One Stop Centres and family counselling centres, and pushing trial courts to treat dowry harassment and dowry death cases (Sections 304-B and 498-A of the IPC, now Sections 80 and 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) as priority matters.
Trial courts have been told to aim to frame charges within 60 to 90 days of the chargesheet being filed and to avoid unnecessary adjournments, while High Courts and states must file compliance reports three times a year until pending cases come down substantially. For families going through a dowry harassment complaint — on either side of it — this could mean genuinely faster hearings instead of years of delay. Anyone dealing with a matrimonial dispute involving dowry, domestic violence, or related criminal charges can read more on our matrimonial and family law page.

Kerala High Court Clarifies the 24-Hour Rule for Arrests
Anyone arrested in India has a constitutional right to be produced before a magistrate within 24 hours. The Kerala High Court has now clarified exactly when that clock starts running in cases where the law allows police or agencies such as the Narcotics Control Bureau, Customs, or the Enforcement Directorate to briefly detain someone for questioning before formally recording an arrest.
The Court also directed police to record the exact time of detention and of formal arrest, to inform the arrested person’s family or a nominated person of the grounds for arrest, and to ensure magistrates actively check for compliance before granting remand. These are basic safeguards against someone being held longer than the law allows before they see a judge — directly relevant if you or a family member is ever taken in for questioning in a criminal matter. Supreme Court Orders Special Teams to Crack Down on Fake Motor Accident Insurance Claims
The Supreme Court has directed every state to set up a dedicated Special Investigation Team to look into suspected fake motor accident compensation claims. The direction followed a case where the same vehicle was allegedly shown as being involved in multiple accidents so that repeated insurance payouts could be claimed — something the Court called a potential fraud of “enormous proportion.”
The Court noted that such fraud doesn’t just hurt insurance companies — it eventually pushes up premiums for genuine, honest policyholders. Insurance companies have also been told to report suspicious claims to the new SITs and to check whether their own staff may have colluded in any fraud. If you’ve filed a genuine accident or insurance claim and are facing unusual delays or scrutiny, our consumer disputes page has more on how we can help.

Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana Gets a New Interim Chairman
Closer to home, the Bar Council of India has appointed Maninderjit Singh Bedi, Advocate General for Punjab, as interim Chairman of the Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana. The appointment fills a vacancy created when the previous interim chief, Pravindra Singh Chauhan, was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Elections to the state bar council have already been completed, but the full council — including two women members the Supreme Court has directed be co-opted — is yet to be formally constituted, so this is a temporary administrative arrangement to keep things running smoothly in the meantime.
